About the Bingham Community Big Band
The Bingham Community Big Band has deep roots in the musical life of Bingham and the surrounding area. As many of you will know, Colin Smith MBE founded a big band in the late 1970s known as the Toot Hill Dance Band at Toot Hill School. Its creation provided talented young musicians with an opportunity to experience the joy of playing big band jazz, swing, and popular music — and for the residents of Bingham to enjoy this wonderful style of music up close and personal.
Many ex-members still play, some professionally and many in local bands. There have also been many exciting projects that have grown from this tradition, including the Amalgam Big Band, 12 in a Bar Big Band, numerous jazz jam sessions, The Alumni Big Band, and most recently the Bingham Rabbit-Cows Big Band.
Throughout its history, music in Bingham has been a launchpad for many musicians who have gone on to professional careers in music, education, and the creative industries. Several alumni have performed with national touring bands, orchestras, and recording artists. However, the band remains firmly rooted in its founding mission: to nurture musical talent, build community, and bring people together through the shared love of live performance.
Past members have included school leavers, seasoned amateurs, music graduates, and professional players who have supported and inspired the next generation. A strong tradition of mentorship and musical friendship has always been part of the band’s spirit.
Today and the Future
Today, the Bingham Community Big Band continues to rehearse regularly and perform at community events, festivals, and private functions. Its repertoire covers classic swing from the 1930s and ’40s, modern big band arrangements, Latin, funk, and pop, reflecting the diversity and energy of its membership.
Looking ahead, the band’s vision is to:
• Expand opportunities for young musicians, providing them with experience in ensemble playing and improvisation alongside experienced mentors.
• Commission new music and arrange workshops with professional musicians and composers.
• Strengthen community ties, performing for local charities, civic events, and cultural celebrations.
• Create a scholarship program to support promising young musicians with lessons, instrument access, and musical development opportunities.
• Record and share performances to promote musical engagement across wider audiences.
• Build partnerships with schools, music services, and arts organisations to support music education in the Bingham area.
At its heart, the Bingham Community Big Band remains a welcoming, inclusive, and forward-looking ensemble, proud of its history and excited about its future.
